Do you want more from life? More wealth, more laughter, more travel, more love, and more impact?
Of course, you do.
No matter how great our life currently is, we all want it to be better. And we know to make it better, we need to make some changes.
Doing the same thing today as you did yesterday will only get you the same results you had yesterday.
The question then becomes, how do we make the changes that will unlock our better life? It can be very painful to make the changes necessary to gain traction and improve. I know this firsthand. The good news is that controlling our focus is a simple start to unlocking our better life.
Inputs
In the world today we get bombarded by a mass of inputs that act like noise and constantly interrupt what we want to be doing with what someone else wants us to be doing. In order for us to have a better life, we need to be in charge of our own attention and focus. We need to improve our signal-to-noise ratio. And that can be done by taking control of our inputs so that we have the focus to produce valuable outputs.
Here are just a few examples of inputs that are robbing our focus:
-
Text messages constantly dinging
-
Social media likes, and checking for likes every 5 minutes
-
Smart watch “time to be more active” notifications
-
Slack messages buzzing all day
-
Endless emails
-
Constantly checking for new emails
-
Phone calls
-
14 Internet tabs open. All calling for our attention.
-
Netflix constantly on in the background while we are trying to be present
-
Watching TV while scrolling on Instagram
Shallow work
With this occurring throughout the day, everyday, we are drained from our ability to focus, and all we have left is the capacity to do shallow work.
Shallow work doesn’t produce value and therefor it will not bring us more wealth, laughter, travel, love and impact. All shallow work brings us is shallow rewards.
If you are wanting to have more in life you need to give and create more. In order to do this you must have the presence and the focus available to produce value.
Challenge
I challenge you to take an audit of where your focus goes in the day.
-
Takes notes how you feel when you are able to work uninterrupted on important work
-
Take notes how you feel when you are interrupted every 10 minutes
Protect your focus
If you are looking for a way to protect one of our most valuable resources, focus, then:
-
Turn off your notifications
-
Set boundaries to prevent interruptions
-
Close your email
-
Keep your phone out of your line of sight
-
Forget multitasking
-
Be fully present on one task at a time
If you can stay present your life will open up with opportunities.
What is stealing your focus?
