This book has been recommended by countless people, and I am very glad I finally read it. For a long time I worried about making this blog and not having unique enough thoughts that people would care about. I worried I would be perceived as a fake, as a cheat, all because most of my concepts on improving everyday life have already been said by Tony Robbins, Ray Dalio, Napoleon Hill, or Tim Ferriss. However, Steal like an artist helped me see that I can combine the ideas of those who came before and blend it into my own message, through my own voice. There is such a large audience that perhaps someone will even connect with what I am saying, and if I can help them improve their life it will all be worth it.
Summary:
The book goes through the idea that nothing is original any more. Therefore, everything that will be put out into the world will just be an interpretation of what is already there. By blending our influences and seeking inspiration from the important areas of our own lives were can create original works that are, essentially, stolen from other creators. For example an architect taking inspiration from a tree, or a chef telling a story through food like a writer would through words.
Key Take Away:
It can be so hard to start something new when you do not yet have your own voice. It can worry you that no matter what you produce, it will just seem like a copy. This is not true. Use others for inspirations and blend styles from a few of your favorites, this can then evolve into your own style. As long as you give credit and not try to pass off someone else work as your own. It is ok. Remember, even the Beatles started off as a cover band.
